Remember last year when I announced Lauren and I would be supporting two first year pro’s this year with a scholarship? Well, though it took much longer to finish than expected, I’m stoked to announce that it did in fact it finally happen!

I received about 60 applicants from many many many deserving, qualified, ambitious, interesting, and talented first year professionals.

USA Triathlon Foundation Announces 2017 Grant Awardees and Jesse Thomas Scholarship Recipients

Jesse Thomas Scholarship
The Jesse Thomas Scholarship assists first-year professional triathletes with the expenses of training and racing at the elite level in an effort to kick-start their careers. Thomas, a six-time winner of the Wildflower Triathlon and two-time IRONMAN 70.3 champion, began racing as an elite in 2011.

In conjunction with the USA Triathlon Foundation, the Jesse Thomas Scholarship awarded $4,000 each to three rookie professional triathletes for the 2017 season: Alissa Doehla (Tryon, N.C.), Allison Linnell (Miami, Fla.) and Tony Smoragiewicz (Rapid City, S.D.).

Two Rapid City standouts set sights on 2020 Olympics

It was Tony Smoragiewicz, a 2012 Rapid City Central graduate and fellow triathlon runner. The four year member of the Michigan track and cross country teams also competed in the triathlon, and also came home with a silver medal.

Tony Smoragiewicz has seen a lot in his four years as part of the Michigan cross country and track and field teams, but he's never seen what he saw last weekend  . . . Smoragiewicz recorded a No. 1 time himself at 3,000 meter . . . his new PR marked a 19-second improvement over his previous career best.

Michigan wins 2015 Big Ten Men's Cross Country Championships

The Michigan men’s cross country team won its 10th Big Ten Men’s Cross Country Championship, and first since 1998, on Sunday with a total of 63 points and three runners among the top nine at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course in Chicago . . . The Wolverines’ Mason Ferlic took second with a time of 23:19.6, while teammates Ben Flanagan and Tony Smoragiewicz crossed the line eighth and ninth, respectively, to claim All-Conference accolades.

USA Triathlon Announces 2013 Athletes of the Year
Tamara Gorman and Tony Smoragiewicz, Junior Elite triathlon phenoms from Rapid City, S.D., were named as the 2013 Junior Triathletes of the Year. Gorman and Smoragiewicz also earned recognition on USA Triathlon’s list of Junior Elite and Youth Elite All-Americans, which is based on their final national ranking and performance in top junior and youth draft-legal events.

Rapid City’s rapid tri talent
When Tony Smoragiewicz and Tamara Gorman won the junior elite gold medals at the Vila Velha PATCO Pan American Triathlon Championships in Brazil in June, it wasn’t too much of a stretch that two young U.S. triathletes were the 16-19 champions of two continents. The fact that they were both from South Dakota (population 833,000), no triathlon hotbed like California or Colorado, lengthened the odds considerably. But the fact that they both came from Rapid City, (pop. 69,000), a far cry from tri Meccas like San Diego or Boulder, had their coaches comparing them to the Brownlee brothers - albeit on a much more modest level.

Tony S, the "other" Junior

Tony Smoragiewicz is not America's fastest returning American high school runner, as Lukas Verzbicas was coming into his final year of high school.

Tony S is merely America's third fastest returner.

This, according to Milesplit.com's preseason rankings. As of this writing, he sits #3 in Dyestat's national poll as well. At least in the case of Lukas V and Tony S, triathlon isn't harvesting the crop of talented single-sporters. It's the running world scratching its head, wondering how jacks-of-all-trades got so fast afoot.
